AN EASY SOLUTION FOR A DANGEROUS PROBLEM
When the SafetySpear™ is installed, its simple design ensures that it will block the path of abandoned production drill rods if they work free and fall.
The spears’ catch/control design ensures the freefalling drill rods are retained within the overhead blast hole and cannot escape to injure personnel or damage machinery underneath.
The SafetySpear™ is lightweight, cost-effective, safe and fast to install. The 89mm blast hole size weighs in at just 3.5kg, making the SafetySpear™ suitable for operator handling underground without putting personnel at elevated risk of manual handling injuries.

DESIGNED WITH OPERATORS IN MIND
With no pinch points, and a weight which enables an easy one-person lift, the spear is designed to be operator friendly.
Despite its lightweight construction, the spear has heavy duty stopping power and can absorb the full impact of a falling drill rod, whilst dissipating the energy
and minimising stresses on the surrounding rock.
The SafetySpear™ comes in three different sizes, to suit common drill hole diameters.

The SafetySpear™ solution enables the hazard to be dealt with immediately without interruptions to the work cycle, saving miners both time and money. A problem typically costing thousands can now be solved for under $1,000.
To install the SafetySpear™, a simple installation dolly is screwed onto the Longhole’s drifter and the SafetySpear™ is placed on top of this dolly. Following the installation instructions, the SafetySpear™ is pushed into the blast hole pointed end first by the drifter approximately 1.5 metres into competent rock strata.
After installation the dolly slips out of the back of the SafetySpear™, leaving the spear behind. The dolly can be used multiple times for this task. The SafetySpear™ can also self-engage if driven into the back of the abandoned drill string, securing the abandoned drill string in place, and enabling operators to install the spear one of two ways.
Operators are not exposed to any additional hazards when installing the SafetySpear™ on the drifter, as the drill assembly stays in place, guarding the operator with the Pito Jaws closed. The rig remains aligned with the hole so installation time is reduced to approximately 2.5 minutes.
The reflective base allows for in-hole inspection, and makes it easy for personnel to identify SafetySpear™ locations using a torch.
Simple and easy to follow pictorial instructions are provided with the spears, simplifying the process and making it easy to understand for operators with all levels of experience.
2.5 minutes to install
By using the same drilling equipment which lost the drill string in the first place, installation of the SafetySpear™ takes just 2.5 minutes, allowing production drilling to continue uninterrupted. Current and commonly used methods throughout the industry can cause lengthy disruptions to the drilling cycle and involve many workers and pieces of equipment. The SafetySpear™ solves all of these issues.
